Regulations on Compensation for Baggage Delayed Over 24 Hours

If your baggage is delayed, make sure to report it to the baggage services office at the airport before leaving.
You will be provided with a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) — keep a copy of the report or the reference number, as it will be needed to submit your compensation claim later.

Determining Compensation Amount:

The compensation amount is calculated based on the number of delay days.
The delay period is counted from the scheduled arrival date until the baggage is delivered to the airport or to the passenger's address, either directly or via a shipping company.

Regulations on Compensation for Permanently Lost Baggage

If your baggage is delayed or missing, make sure to report it to the baggage services office at the airport before leaving.
You will be provided with a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) — keep a copy or the reference number for your compensation claim.

Baggage Recovery Deadline:

Airlines typically search for lost baggage for a period ranging between 10 to 21 days (depending on the airline's policy).
If not found within that period, the baggage is classified as permanently lost, and the passenger becomes eligible for compensation.

Compensation Amount Determination:

  • Compensation is based on the contents of the baggage, up to a maximum of USD 1,700, or its equivalent in local currency.

  • Most airlines do not cover valuable contents such as jewelry, cash, or electronics unless they were declared in writing during check-in.

  • If the lost baggage contained frozen or perishable food, the airline may dispose of it if damaged or spoiled while stored. In such cases, the passenger is not entitled to compensation, in accordance with most airline policies.
